    London Aircon – WPJ Heating

London homes present a wider variety of air conditioning challenges than almost anywhere else in the country, from Georgian townhouses with heritage restrictions to warehouse conversions with high ceilings and terraced properties where external space is tight. WPJ Heating works across this full range, assessing each property individually and specifying systems that are genuinely matched to the specific demands of a London home.

The urban heat island effect means inner and central London runs meaningfully warmer in summer than surrounding areas, and dense building stock with limited natural ventilation makes many homes hard to cool without mechanical assistance. WPJ Heating has been installing systems across South and West London for years and we understand how London properties overheat, what makes them different from properties elsewhere and what is actually needed to address it effectively.

Every home we install air conditioning in is treated as its own distinct job. We do not arrive with a system already chosen or a standard approach applied regardless of what we find. The free site survey is where we look at the property properly, understand how it is used and identify what will work within its specific constraints. The result is an installation that performs as it should, in a home that was properly assessed before anything was agreed.

Aircon FAQs – London Residents Ask…

What does the free site survey involve and what happens after it?

During the survey we visit the property, look at each room you want to cool, assess ceiling heights, room volumes, sun exposure, pipework routing and where outdoor units can be practically positioned. We discuss your requirements and any constraints the building presents, then come back to you with a clear recommendation and price. There is no obligation after the survey and nothing is committed to until you are satisfied to proceed.

What is the difference between a heat pump air conditioning system and a cooling-only unit?

A heat pump system, also called a reverse-cycle system, provides both cooling in summer and heating in winter by moving heat in either direction depending on what is needed. A cooling-only unit does what its name suggests and cannot provide warmth. For most London homes a heat pump system offers considerably more year-round value because it can supplement central heating in individual rooms as well as providing summer cooling. We explain the relevant options for your property during the survey.

What is F-Gas certification and why does it matter when choosing an air conditioning installer?

F-Gas refers to the fluorinated greenhouse gases used as refrigerants in air conditioning systems. By law, any installer who handles, adds or recovers refrigerant must hold valid F-Gas certification. Working with an uncertified installer is illegal and can also affect any equipment warranty. WPJ Heating holds F-Gas certification and our Qualification Number is FGAS3016901, which we are happy to confirm at any stage of the enquiry process.

Are modern air conditioning systems actually suitable for older period properties, not just new builds?

Yes. The majority of WPJ Heating’s London installations are in period properties, including Victorian terraces, Edwardian semis, Georgian townhouses and converted mansion blocks. Older buildings do require more thought around pipework routing, condenser placement and in some cases planning or heritage considerations, but a well-planned installation in a period home is entirely achievable. The site survey is where we work through the specifics of your building and establish the most practical approach.

How do I decide how many indoor units my London home actually needs?

The right number depends on how many rooms have a genuine temperature problem and how those rooms are used day to day. A bedroom that overheats at night and a home office that becomes uncomfortable in the afternoon are the most common starting points. We assess each room during the site survey and give an honest view of where air conditioning will make a meaningful difference, without proposing more units than the property actually needs. We also explain how a multi-split setup can serve several rooms from a single outdoor condenser where that is the sensible approach.

What ongoing maintenance does a London air conditioning system need after installation?

The main requirement is an annual service covering filter cleaning on both the indoor and outdoor units, refrigerant level checks, electrical connection inspection and a general efficiency assessment. Regular servicing keeps running costs down, extends the operational life of the system and means any developing issues are identified before they become problems. WPJ Heating carries out servicing on systems we have installed and also on existing units that were fitted by other contractors.
