Maximising Heat Pump Efficiency in SW12 Homes with Limited Outdoor Space

Heat Pump

Even if your SW12 home only has a small garden or limited outdoor space, you can still get excellent performance from your heat pump. It’s possible to make your system more efficient and enjoy lower energy bills using the right setup and adjustments.

Dealing with heat pump noise

A common concern with heat pumps is noise, but many of these worries are based on older models. Modern systems are much quieter thanks to improved technology and stricter regulations.

The outdoor unit contains a fan that produces most of the noise, especially when the system runs at full speed.

  • When outdoor temperatures hover around 0°C, the system works harder, and the fan noise becomes more noticeable.
  • When you increase the thermostat, the unit ramps up its output to reach the new temperature.
  • During initial start-up, as it heats water in the system, the unit runs at a higher capacity before returning to a more energy-saving mode.

It’s important to note that once the temperature stabilises — or drops further into freezing — the immersion heater helps share the load, which reduces the noise.

Noise regulations for outdoor units

Since April 2021, stricter noise limits have been applied to outdoor heat pump units. These limits help ensure minimal disruption for you and your neighbours, especially during evening and overnight hours.

Here are the key points:

  • At nighttime (7 PM to 7 AM), a maximum of 40 decibels at the property boundary or nearest open window is acceptable.
  • During the daytime (7 AM to 7 PM), a maximum of 45 decibels is allowed at the same locations.
  • These sound levels align with EU regulation (No. 813/2013), designed to limit the impact of outdoor heat pump units.

Use zoning to heat only where you need it

Air source heat pump (ASHP) zoning allows you to divide your home into separate heating areas, so you’re not heating every room the same way. This approach is especially useful for different rooms with different heating needs. With a zoned setup, you can warm up high-use areas like the living room or kitchen while using less energy in rarely occupied spaces to cut down on wasted energy and control your heating more precisely.

Add smart controls for better comfort and control

Modern heat pumps can be paired with smart controls that let you manage different zones easily, even when you’re not home. Many of these systems connect to smartphone apps, giving you full access to adjust temperatures in each area of the house. This makes your home more comfortable and ensures efficient energy use.

Adapt the system to your home’s layout

Every property is different, so we tailor heat pump zoning to match your SW12 home’s layout. A heating setup can be designed around the specific rooms and spaces you use frequently. This flexibility allows you to fine-tune how your heat pump performs, regardless of how much space you have outside.

More ways to boost your heat pump’s efficiency

Adjust your heating curve

While installing a heat pump, our heating engineers take the time to set its heating curve. This setting adapts the heating based on the outside temperature, so it plays a big role in how much energy your heat pump uses. If the curve isn’t set correctly, you could end up paying more than necessary.

Pair with solar panels and other energy-saving solutions

You can improve efficiency and lower your carbon footprint by using electricity from a renewable source. Installing solar panels and adding a home battery lets you store that electricity to power your heat pump. This cuts your reliance on the grid and brings down your running costs. If your energy plan includes a time-based tariff, you’ll save even more by using stored energy during peak-rate hours.
